COMMUNITY OUTREACH

  • ISRCH members are pleased to schedule presentations of "Lost! ... But Found, Safe and Sound" and "Hug-A-Tree and Survive" within their local communities.

  • "Lost! ... But Found, Safe and Sound" is a National Parks service program. It is made available through the Association of National Park Rangers, Golden, Colorado. This program is for children on how not to get lost, how to stay comfortable if they do get lost, and how they can be found more quickly.

To schedule a presentation or demo,

  • NASAR's "Hug-A-Tree and Survive" Program was developed to educate children in a select few of the most basic and vital survival principles.

We hope your child never needs this knowledge, but if you discuss this information with your child (preferably each time you go on an outing), then if he or she does get lost, it may help him or her to remember one or more of the facts that will make the search short and successful.

What To Do If Lost:

  • Stay put, do not travel any further once you realize you are lost

  • Make yourself visible

  • Hang a bandana or any article that will attract attention in a tree

  • Use a signal mirror (a CD is a great reflector) to draw attention to yourself

  • Make yourself heard ... blow a whistle

  • Make shelter. Using a large trash bag, make a hole in the bottom and place over your head like a raincoat

  • Stay warm and dry

  • Remain safe

The Lost in the Woods 9 Rules for Survival:

  1. Stay together if you are with another person or pet

  2. Stay in one place

  3. Keep warm

  4. Find a cozy waiting place, not a hiding place

  5. Put out something bright

  6. Look bigger for searchers

  7. Make a nest to lie down

  8. Eat only what you brought with you

  9. Stay away from large rivers and lakes

The Survival Kit:

  1. Large Garbage Bag (contractor thickness)

  2. Whistle

  3. Signal Flag - Bright Bandana

  4. Reflector - Foil or CD

  5. Snack

  6. Water

  7. Container - Fanny/Waist Pack

A Few Hiking Rules:

  • Do not travel alone

  • Stay with your group

  • Stay on marked trails and do not take shortcuts

  • Do not travel after dark

  • Become familiar with the area you will be traveling

  • Dress in layers - do not over heat or get too cold

  • Avoid cotton clothing

  • When wet, get dry. When cold, get warm

  • Stay out of the wind when resting

Making An Emergency Shelter:

  • Find a dry location

  • Ensure the shelter is out of the wind

  • Ensure the shelter location is secure ... look up and down and all around for dangers

  • Make sure you can be seen by displaying a visible, recognizable object

  • Do not sit on the ground or a rock. Sit on something warm that will insulate you

  • Keep active to stay warm

  • We appreciate the opportunity to share information with children and as many of their parents and other adults as possible.

  • There is no charge for our presentations. Everyone in ISRCH is a volunteer.

  • Our tax-exempt organization always welcomes donations to help offset costs.
